The efforts and exploits of New
Zealand's military forces are well known. However
while troops were sent overseas there were others
manning defence works back at home. It is these
defence works that often gets overlooked when
one thinks about our both our military heritage
and urban heritage.

Even though Local And
Central Government attitudes to our Built Military
Heritage is changing, we are still loosing structures.
In 2001 demolition started on the camp buildings
at Fort Dorset. The ex Defence houses 213,215
Taranaki St and ex Defence prefabs behind them
were removed on truck in August 2001 for construction
of accomodation for foreign students (right next
to an active defence establishment!). Early/Mid
2004 saw the caretakers house by Fort Ballance
removed.
Capital Defence sets out to change this by informing
it's visitors about what existed through articles
that look at the military structures
that have disappeared over the years and what
still remains.
By profiling some of the sites in
our Profiles
section Capital Defence lets you see how extensive
some of these sites were.
