In this section are profiles relating to military works built
around Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. They are listed
alphabetically by site name (or topic)
( I have filed forts by name rather than under fort (i.e.: Fort Opau
comes under O for Opau)).
Fort Ballance is one of the better known coastal sites
around Wellington. A site article looks at it's history
while a map shows us how extensive it was. Photo pages 1,2 and 3 gives us a contemporary glimpse of
this extensive site while another page with period photos
gives us a glimpse of it during the late 19th century. Fort Buckley is a lesser known site. It was armed with two 64pdr RML guns. Army munitions magazine built in the Belmont Hills (now
a regional park) during WW2. Fort Dorset has been demolished since Capital Defence first
went live. We have several pages of photos taken after the Army had
vacated (but still owned) Fort Dorset. A map and profile article tell us about it's history and
we even have a period photo or two. Perched high up on a hill in isolated Makara is this coastal
battery. However it had a very short operational life. Built late 1880's as part of the move from defending the
inner harbour to denying access to it. The massey memorial was built over it. originally a Submarine Mining Depot. Developed as a naval Base WW2 After the war it became an Air Force base. It has been
decommissioned and awaiting it's fate. This hospital was originally built for the New Zealand
Military but was transferred to the US Marines before completion. After the war it became a public hospital and is now the
Silverstream Park Christian Centre
